The Indian renaissance which started from the 19th century and culminated in 20th century was the period in which many stalwarts were born and contributed in removing social evils like ‘Sati Pratha’, introduced modern education system provided new trend in literary work and brought about the development of science in the country. Pt. Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar was one of these stalwarts.
Pt. Vidyasagar was born on 26th September 1820 in Birsinghe. He was one of the pillars of Indian culture and modern thoughts. He contributed immensely empowering women, raising standards of public education system. He emphasized on compulsary primary education in student’s mother tounge. He also developed scientific and logical thought process for the overall development of the people of India. He wrote the primary readers in Bengali, which are still very relevant to this day. He also wrote book on Sanskrit grammer.
